One of the best Italian cities to visit if you’re on a tour of Southern Italy’s treasures is Bari. Bari is the ideal Italian city to visit with centuries of history, tonnes of gastronomic attractions, and a beautiful downtown to meander around. The best things to do in Bari have actually spread out all throughout the city.
It is ideal for a long weekend getaway or as the starting point for your Puglia journey because of all of these factors. Due to its airport, Bari will for most of us serve as the beginning point for seeing the larger Puglia region (which is stunning, by the way). With our road trip through Puglia and our visit to the famous city of Matera, we “tacked on” a stop in Bari. Spending a few days there is worthwhile because it makes a great beginning (or conclusion) place for a vacation.
So, in order to make your trip a little easier, I’ve listed some of the best activities in Bari that we recommend.

Bari Vecchia,
One of the best things to do in Bari when seeing the city is to visit Bari Vecchia, the most historic area of the city.
You see, it’s just picture-perfect and utterly lovely to stroll around its winding alleyways, piazzas, and exquisite cobblestone streets.
Since no one enjoys being lost in reality, I normally detest stating things like “get lost in the city streets,” yet Bari Vecchia is the ideal location for it.
To be honest, even if you don’t attempt, you’ll probably end up lost when traversing the tiny alleys. Having said that, it’s nevertheless enjoyable – exactly like in Venice (where we always get lost).
Now, before you enter the ancient section of the city, there is usually parking available along the promenade. However, if you’re running out of room, there’s also this parking lot that’s close to the Bari Vecchia walls.
Once inside, look for the San Sabino Cathedral and the di Sant’Antonio, which was constructed in the 16th century to defend Bari.
Oh, and make sure you stop by one of the delectable trattorias that line the streets here.
We adored Osteria Le Arpie since it is completely casual and serves great orecchiette pasta (which is actually from Bari).
Sacred Heart Cathedral
You must visit San Sabino Cathedral, which is located in the centre of mediaeval Bari, as I already explained.
One of the most impressive cathedrals in this region of Italy, it is definitely worth visiting while you are in Bari.
It is a magnificent example of Baroque architecture that was first built in the 1100s and stands majestically overlooking Bari, especially in the crypt.
Once inside, make your way down to the crypts to see the shrine to Madonna Odegitria, which is quite fascinating to see. Especially if you’re interested in Italian history, it’s one of the top things to do in Bari.
The Antica gelateria Gentile, which offers some of the best gelatos in Bari, is nearby (approximately an 8-minute stroll). From the surface, it appears to be quite ordinary, yet the flavours speak for themselves.

Lungomare Nazario Sauro,
Lungomare Nazario Sauro is a lengthy promenade area that is ideal for an early morning (or late evening) stroll. It is the beachfront road of the “newer” portion of Bari. Great for sunrise walks, but as I detest getting up early, I almost always choose the sunset route. Yes, it faces northeast, but you can still see how the lovely orange hues of the setting sun transform Bari.
Oh, and go to Lido San Francesco if you’re seeking a city beach in Bari. It is one of Bari’s busiest beaches and ideal if you aren’t touring Puglia’s larger coastline.
One thing to keep in mind is that during warm weekends, this spot fills up, so don’t anticipate it to be quiet.
Having said that, if you want to get away from the city, drive to Parco Nationale Alta Murgia. This is where you may visit Castel del Monte, a long-standing historical citadel outside of Bari.
Theater Petruzzelli
Purchase tickets to see the orchestra at Teatro Petruzzelli as far in advance as you can. If you want to take in some top-notch classical music or drama, this is one of the best things to do in Bari.
Having said that, if you are unable to attend the performance, visit Teatro Petruzzelli itself. It’s worth every penny.
Take a day excursion to the ancient ruins of Egnazia if that doesn’t sound fascinating.
Discover the history of the Messapii people, who lived in this area of Italy in the eighth century BC, and their way of life.
It is really worthwhile, and you can easily add on a trip to Monopoli (a stunning city).
Svevo Castle
The castle in Bari is only one of several famous ones in Italy that are worth visiting.
Once you arrive, be sure to explore the interior to view the treasures and displays that give this place its unique charm.
In addition, you can go through the moat, guard towers, and the main courtyard.
One of the greatest things to do in Bari if you’re exploring the city is to pay the entrance fee, which is approximately 10-15 euros.
