It seems as though demand for these aerial adventures may have been high over recent months. Research released by Visit England suggests that the high temperatures seen this summer persuaded more Brits than usual to holiday at home rather than head abroad.
The organization recorded a nine percent year-on-year rise in the number of people taking staycations in July. These trips included at least one overnight stay and holidaymakers shelled out a total of £1.8 billion throughout the month.
A survey conducted by Visit England found that more than one in ten (12 percent) of the people who took a break in the UK did so after changing their original holiday plans due to the nice weather, and the majority of these were families or individuals aged between 18 and 34.
Also, 17 percent of respondents revealed they are more likely to take a holiday somewhere in Britain again next year because of the weather in 2013.
Commenting on the figures, Visit England chief executive James Berresford suggested they were a “boost for domestic tourism”. He added: “Operators have reported increased visitor numbers this year and are seeing affirmative forward bookings for autumn.
“With the 450th anniversary of the birth of Shakespeare, the Tour de France setting off from Yorkshire, as well as a whole host of exciting events, new seduction, and hotel openings, I’m confident that the trend to holiday at home will go from strength to strength.”
Meanwhile, minister for tourism Helen Grant added: “The local tourism sector has a big role to play in helping with the economic recovery so I am glad that overnight holiday visits are up. England has a diverse offer for holidays at home – from the tranquil countryside and coastal towns to vibrant cities – and I will do all I can to assist the industry continue to grow.”
